Rewriting one’s own biography with AI. At the tap of a finger on her mobile phone – almost casually and largely automatically – Vesta Magdalena alters a fundamental parameter of her story: her gender. Everything else remains the same.

Nothing in this photo album is real, and yet everything is real. Since, for the first time, the childhood memories captured here match her true gender identity.

REW / OVR is an intimate journey into her own past and a retrospective self-creation. The artist enters the archive of her childhood and claims the right to re-authorise its images. At the same time, the work explores society’s attributions of gender and exposes how artificial intelligence recognises, constructs and reproduces femininity.
